Punjabi Mukta Words — A Child’s First Reading
Mukta words are written with no vowel signs — every letter simply says its own sound. They are the very first words a child learns to read in Gurmukhi. Start with two-letter words, then three, then four. Free printable tracing PDF, no sign-ups.
Two-letter words
A child’s very first words — two sounds joined together, no vowel signs.
Three-letter words
Three sounds in a row — sound out each letter, then blend them.
Four-letter words
Longer words to read — mukta words this long are rare, so this is a short, special set.
What is a mukta word?
In Gurmukhi, most letters carry a built-in “a” sound. A mukta word (ਮੁਕਤਾ means “free”) is written with no vowel signs at all — so you read it using only the letters themselves. ਘਰ is simply gh + ar → ghar (“home”).
That is why mukta words are the first words a child reads. There is nothing new to learn — just blend the sounds you already know. Once two-letter words feel easy, the same skill stretches to three and four letters.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a mukta word in Punjabi?
- A mukta word is a Gurmukhi word written with no vowel signs (matras). Each consonant is read with its built-in “a” sound, so words like ਘਰ (ghar) and ਕਲਮ (kalam) can be read using only the 35 letters — no extra symbols.
- Why are mukta words a child’s first words?
- Because they need no new symbols. Once a child knows a handful of letters and their sounds, they can blend those sounds into a real mukta word straight away — the Gurmukhi equivalent of English CVC words like “cat”.
- What are some examples of two-letter mukta words?
- Common two-letter mukta words include ਘਰ (ghar, home), ਮਨ (man, mind), ਰਸ (ras, juice), ਕਰ (kar, do), ਦਰ (dar, door), ਫਲ (phal, fruit) and ਬਲ (bal, strength).
- How do I teach a child to read mukta words?
- Say each letter’s sound aloud, slowly blend the sounds together, then trace and say the whole word. Start with two-letter words and only move to three and four letters once the shorter ones feel easy.
