Gurmukhi Picture Dictionary

It is a visual vocabulary list that pairs each Punjabi word — written in the Gurmukhi script — with a picture, a simple pronunciation, and its English meaning. Pictures help young learners connect a new word to something they already recognise, which makes the word much easier to remember.

This dictionary has over 574 words grouped into 27 everyday themes such as animals, fruits, family, colours, the body, nature, and Sikhi vocabulary. We keep adding more.

The vocabulary themes follow the SOJI (Sikh Research Institute) Boli — Language Arts — Standards for Kindergarten to Grade 5, which build vocabulary around family, colours, animals, plants, geography, weather, the house, school, the Gurdwara, the calendar, and Sikh terminology.

Pick one theme at a time. Point to the picture and say the Punjabi word together, then use it around the house — "Eh ki rang hai?" (What colour is this?). Short, daily practice with a handful of words works far better than trying to learn a long list at once.
