Week 3 · The Gurus continue · Day 15

Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji — two swords, one purpose

Today we meet Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Guru, who changed the way Sikhs understood their place in the world. At his investiture he asked for two swords instead of one — Miri, the sword of earthly justice and courage, and Piri, the sword of spiritual wisdom and prayer. He showed that loving the Creator and protecting the helpless are not two different things — they are one purpose, worn together.

Today's idea

The 6th Guru wore two swords — Miri (worldly / political responsibility) and Piri (prayer and spirit) — showing that a Sikh is both spiritually strong and ready to protect the helpless.

Pick two or three — there's no wrong way to do a day.

Today's Gurbani

ਸਿਰਿ ਆਤਪਤੁ ਸਚੌ ਤਖਤੁ; ਜੋਗ ਭੋਗ ਸੰਜੁਤੁ ਬਲਿ ॥

Siri aatapat sachau takhat; jog bhog sanjut bal.

“With the canopy of honour above, the Guru sits on the true throne — embellished with both spiritual power and the strength to act in the world.”

— Bhatt Sall Ji · Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji · Ang 1406
