Week 5 · The Khalsa · Day 30
The Panj Pyare — the Five Beloved Ones
The Panj Pyare — the Five Beloved Ones — were the very first members of the Khalsa, initiated by Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Vaisakhi 1699. What makes their story so remarkable is that they came from completely different parts of India and different walks of life: a shopkeeper, a water-carrier, a barber, a farmer, and a tailor. The Guru had chosen five brave souls, and together they showed that the Khalsa has no barriers of region, caste, or background. Today, wherever Amrit Sanchar takes place, five initiated Sikhs represent the Panj Pyare — their spirit lives on.
The first five members of the Khalsa came from five different regions and five different backgrounds — showing that the Khalsa belongs to everyone.

Dhan dhan so Gursikh kahee-ai; jin Har naamaa mukh raam kahi-aa.
“Blessed, truly blessed, is the Guru's Sikh whose lips are touched by the Lord's Name.”
Ask: 'Five people from five different places — why does it matter that the Khalsa was made up of people from everywhere?'
