ਅਲਾਦੀਨ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਦੂਈ ਚਿਰਾਗ

ਬਹੁਤ ਸਮਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਇੱਕ ਦੂਰ-ਦੁਰਾਡੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਲਾਦੀਨ ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਮੁੰਡਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਪੈਸੇ ਤਾਂ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਿਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਨੇਕ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ 'ਤੇ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਮੁਸਕਾਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਸੀ।

Long ago, in a faraway town, there lived a poor boy named Aladdin. He had little money, but he had a kind heart and a happy smile.

ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਅਣਜਾਣ ਆਦਮੀ ਆਇਆ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਅਲਾਦੀਨ ਦਾ ਗੁਆਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਚਾਚਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਕ ਛਲ ਸੀ; ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਖੋਟਾ ਜਾਦੂਗਰ ਸੀ।

One day, a stranger came to town. He wore fine clothes and said he was Aladdin's long-lost uncle. But this was a trick. He was really a wicked magician.

"ਆ ਬੱਚਾ," ਜਾਦੂਗਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਜ਼ਰਾ ਇਸ ਗੁਫ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਚਿਰਾਗ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆ।"

"Come, my boy," said the magician. "Climb into this cave and bring me an old lamp."

ਅਲਾਦੀਨ ਗੋਡਿਆਂ ਭਾਰ ਰੀਂਗਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਨੇਰੀ ਗੁਫ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੰਘ ਗਿਆ। ਉੱਥੇ ਧੂੜ ਭਰੇ ਇੱਕ ਤਖ਼ਤੇ 'ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਿੱਤਲ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਨਿੱਕਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਚਿਰਾਗ ਦਿਸਿਆ। ਜਿਉਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਚਿਰਾਗ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ, ਜਾਦੂਗਰ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦੀ ਚੀਕਿਆ, "ਛੇਤੀ ਕਰ, ਇਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਫੜਾ!"

Aladdin crawled deep into the dark cave. There, on a dusty shelf, he found a small brass lamp. When he picked it up, the magician shouted, "Give it to me now!"

ਪਰ ਅਲਾਦੀਨ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਦਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਲਾ ਲੱਗਿਆ, ਸੋ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਚਿਰਾਗ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਘੁੱਟ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਨਾ ਵਧਾਇਆ। ਗੁੱਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਲ-ਪੀਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਾਦੂਗਰ ਨੇ ਧੜੰਮ ਕਰਕੇ ਗੁਫ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਪੈਰ ਪਟਕਦਾ ਤੁਰ ਗਿਆ।

But something felt wrong, so Aladdin kept the lamp close and would not hand it over. The angry magician slammed the cave shut and stormed away.

ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਕੱਲੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਅਲਾਦੀਨ ਨੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਚਿਰਾਗ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਫ਼ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਘਸਾਇਆ—ਤਾਂ ਤੜਾਕ ਦੇਣੇ ਤੇਜ਼ ਰੌਸ਼ਨੀ ਦੇ ਘੁੰਮਣਘੇਰ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੱਸਮੁੱਖ ਜਿੰਨ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲ ਆਇਆ!

Alone in the dark, Aladdin rubbed the lamp to clean it. Whoosh! A friendly spirit of the lamp appeared in a swirl of light.

"ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅਜ਼ਾਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ," ਜਾਦੂਈ ਜਿੰਨ ਬੋਲਿਆ, "ਦੱਸ, ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਹੈ?"

"You have freed me," said the magic spirit. "What do you wish?"

"ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਘਰ ਲੈ ਚੱਲੋ," ਅਲਾਦੀਨ ਨੇ ਬੜੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਆਖਿਆ।

"Please take me home to my mother," said Aladdin kindly.

ਅੱਖ ਝਪਕਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਘਰ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਿਆ। ਜਿੰਨ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗਰਮ ਖਾਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ, ਪਰ ਅਲਾਦੀਨ ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਨਿਮਾਣਾ ਹੀ ਰਿਹਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਲੋੜਵੰਦਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦਿਲ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਵੰਡਿਆ।

In a blink, he was home. The spirit gave them warm food and new clothes, but Aladdin stayed humble and shared with everyone in need.

ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਉਹ ਖੋਟਾ ਜਾਦੂਗਰ ਭੇਸ ਬਦਲ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਸ ਆ ਗਿਆ। ਉਹ ਹਾਕਾਂ ਮਾਰਨ ਲੱਗਾ, "ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਚਿਰਾਗ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਲੈ ਲਓ!" ਉਹ ਅਲਾਦੀਨ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਰਮਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਜਾਦੂਈ ਚਿਰਾਗ ਹਥਿਆਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ।

One day, the wicked magician returned in disguise. "New lamps for old!" he called, hoping to trick Aladdin's mother into trading the wonderful lamp.

ਪਰ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਅਲਾਦੀਨ ਨੇ ਝੱਟ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਜਾਦੂਈ ਜਿੰਨ ਦੇ ਕੰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁਝ ਕਿਹਾ, ਅਤੇ ਜਿੰਨ ਨੇ ਹੌਲੀ ਦੇਣੇ ਜਾਦੂਗਰ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ, ਮਾਰੂਥਲੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੂਰ ਲੈ ਗਿਆ, ਅਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੀ ਨੁੱਕਰੇ ਲਾਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉੱਥੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰ ਤਿਆਰ ਖੜ੍ਹੇ ਸਨ, ਜੋ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਏ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਠੱਗ ਨਾ ਸਕੇ।

But clever Aladdin spotted him at once. He whispered to the magic spirit, who gently lifted the magician up, carried him far across the desert, and dropped him at the edge of the land. The town guards were waiting, and they led him away so he could never cheat anyone again.

Aladdin and his mother lived happily, always honest and always kind.
