In a small village lived a good, hardworking man named Ali Baba. He chopped wood in the forest to care for his family.

One day, while gathering sticks, Ali Baba heard hooves. He hid behind a tree and watched a band of forty thieves ride up to a great rock.
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਜਾ ਸਿਮ ਸਿਮ!" ਚੱਟਾਨ ਚੌੜੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇੱਕ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਗਈ। ਚੋਰ ਆਪਣਾ ਚੋਰੀ ਦਾ ਖਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੈ ਗਏ, ਫਿਰ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਬੰਦ ਹੋ ਜਾ ਸਿਮ ਸਿਮ!" ਅਤੇ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ।
Their leader called out, "Open Sesame!" The rock split wide and opened like a door. The thieves carried their stolen treasure inside, then said, "Close Sesame!" and rode away.

When all was quiet, Ali Baba stepped out and whispered, "Open Sesame!" The rock opened! Inside lay glittering gold. Ali Baba took only a little, just enough for his family, and hurried home.

His greedy brother heard the secret and rushed to the cave alone. He grabbed sack after sack of gold. But in his greed, he forgot the magic words and could not get out!
ਚੋਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਅੰਦਰ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਾਇਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਡਰਾਇਆ, ਪਰ ਉਸਨੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਕਦੇ ਲਾਲਚੀ ਨਾ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਭੱਜਣ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਬਕ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਿਆ।
The thieves found him trapped inside. They gave him a great fright, but he begged and promised to never be greedy again. They let him run home, and he learned his lesson well.
ਗੁੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਏ ਚੋਰ ਹੁਣ ਅਲੀ ਬਾਬਾ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਭੇਸ ਬਦਲ ਕੇ ਅਲੀ ਬਾਬਾ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੜ ਗਿਆ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡੇ ਤੇਲ ਦੇ ਘੜਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੁਕਾ ਕੇ।
The angry thieves now wanted to find Ali Baba. Their leader sneaked into Ali Baba's house disguised as a merchant, hiding his men in big oil jars.
ਪਰ ਅਲੀ ਬਾਬਾ ਕੋਲ ਮੋਰਗਿਆਨਾ ਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਚਲਾਕ ਨੌਕਰਾਣੀ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਘੜਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਝਾਕਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਚੋਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਦੇਖਿਆ! ਪਲਕ ਝਪਕਦੇ ਹੀ, ਉਹ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਲਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਦੌੜੀ।
But Ali Baba had a clever servant girl named Morgiana. She peeked into the jars and saw the thieves hiding! Quick as a wink, she ran to fetch the town guards.

The guards came at once and caught every last thief, jars and all. They were marched away, and the village was safe again.
