A hungry Jackal once wandered into a town looking for food. Dogs began to chase him, barking loudly. The frightened Jackal ran and ran until he leaped over a wall and fell — splash! — straight into a big tub of blue dye.

When he climbed out, his whole body had turned a strange, bright blue. He hurried back to the forest.

The other animals had never seen such a creature. He was not quite a jackal, not quite anything they knew. The blue colour made them afraid.
ਚਲਾਕ ਗਿੱਦੜ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੌਕਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ। "ਡਰੋ ਨਾ," ਉਸਨੇ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਐਲਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ। "ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਣਨ ਲਈ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਮ ਕਰੋ, ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਰੱਖਾਂਗਾ।"
The clever Jackal saw his chance. "Do not be afraid," he announced grandly. "I have been sent to be your king. Bow to me, and I will keep you all safe."

The animals believed him. The lion, the tiger, and the bear all bowed low. They brought him the finest food and served him day and night. The Blue Jackal lived like a king and grew very proud. He even chased away all the other jackals, ashamed of where he came from.

One evening, a pack of jackals far off began to howl, as jackals do. Hearing them, the Blue Jackal forgot himself. He lifted his head and howled too — a long, loud jackal's howl.

At once the animals knew the truth. "He is no king," they cried. "He is only a jackal, painted blue!" And they chased him out of the forest for good.
