ਬਾਂਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਮਗਰਮੱਛ

ਇੱਕ ਚੌੜੀ ਨਦੀ ਦੇ ਕੰਢੇ ਇੱਕ ਉੱਚਾ-ਲੰਮਾ ਦਰੱਖ਼ਤ ਸੀ, ਜੋ ਮਿੱਠੇ-ਮਿੱਠੇ ਅਤੇ ਰਸੀਲੇ ਫ਼ਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਦਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਰੁੱਖ 'ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰ ਬਾਂਦਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ, ਜੋ ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿਨ ਮਜ਼ੇ ਨਾਲ ਫ਼ਲ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ।

On the bank of a wide river grew a tall tree full of sweet, juicy fruit. A clever Monkey lived in the tree and ate the fruit all day long.

ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਇੱਕ ਮਗਰਮੱਛ ਤੈਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕੰਢੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਆਰਾਮ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗਾ। ਦਿਆਲੂ ਬਾਂਦਰ ਨੇ ਰੁੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਉਸ ਅੱਗੇ ਕੁਝ ਫ਼ਲ ਸੁੱਟੇ। ਬਾਂਦਰ ਬੋਲਿਆ, "ਇਹ ਚੱਖ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ, ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਫ਼ਲ ਨੇ!"

One day a Crocodile swam up and rested on the bank. The kind Monkey threw down some fruit for him. "Try these," he said. "They are the sweetest in the land."

ਮਗਰਮੱਛ ਨੂੰ ਫ਼ਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੁਆਦ ਲੱਗੇ। ਉਹ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਆਉਣ ਲੱਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਛੇਤੀ ਹੀ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਪੱਕੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਬਣ ਗਏ। ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਬਾਂਦਰ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਫ਼ਲ ਵੰਡ ਕੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਗਰਮੱਛ ਕੁਝ ਫ਼ਲ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਵੀ ਘਰ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ।

The Crocodile loved the fruit. He came back every day, and soon the two became good friends. Each day the Monkey shared his fruit, and the Crocodile carried some home to his wife.

ਪਰ ਮਗਰਮੱਛ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਬੜੀ ਖਾਰ ਖਾਂਦੀ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਬੋਲੀ, "ਜੇ ਇਹ ਬਾਂਦਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਇੰਨੇ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਫ਼ਲ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਿਲ ਕਿੰਨਾ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਿਲ ਹੀ ਖਾਣ ਲਈ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਦੇਵੋ!"

But the Crocodile's wife was jealous. "If this monkey eats such sweet fruit every day," she said, "his heart must be the sweetest thing of all. Bring me his heart to eat!"

ਮਗਰਮੱਛ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਤਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋਇਆ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬਾਂਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, "ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੋਸਤ, ਅੱਜ ਨਦੀ ਪਾਰ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਦਾਅਵਤ 'ਤੇ ਚੱਲ।" ਬਾਂਦਰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ-ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਮਗਰਮੱਛ ਦੀ ਪਿੱਠ 'ਤੇ ਬੈਠ ਗਿਆ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਰ ਪਏ।

The Crocodile felt sad, but he did as his wife asked. "Dear friend," he told the Monkey, "come to my home across the river for a feast." The Monkey climbed happily onto the Crocodile's back, and they set off across the water.

ਅੱਧੇ ਕੁ ਰਾਹ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਭੋਲੇ ਮਗਰਮੱਛ ਨੇ ਸੱਚ ਦੱਸ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰੀਂ ਦੋਸਤ, ਮੇਰੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਿਲ ਖਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।"

Halfway across, the foolish Crocodile told the truth. "I am sorry, friend. My wife wants to eat your heart."

ਬਾਂਦਰ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਤਾਂ ਡਰ ਗਿਆ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੋਸ਼ ਕਾਇਮ ਰੱਖੇ। ਉਹ ਹੱਸ ਕੇ ਬੋਲਿਆ, "ਲੈ, ਤੂੰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਾ ਦੱਸਿਆ? ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਿਲ ਰੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਟੰਗ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਾਪਸ ਲੈ ਚੱਲ, ਮੈਂ ਹੁਣੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਲੈ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।"

The Monkey was frightened, but he stayed clever. "Oh, why did you not say so?" he laughed. "I left my heart hanging in the tree. Take me back, and I will fetch it for you."

ਬੁੱਧੂ ਮਗਰਮੱਛ ਝੱਟ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਮੁੜ ਪਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਪਸ ਤੈਰਨ ਲੱਗਾ। ਜਿਉਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਕੰਢੇ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ, ਬਾਂਦਰ ਛੜੱਪਾ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਰੁੱਖ 'ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸਾਹ ਲਿਆ।

The silly Crocodile turned around and swam back. The moment they reached the bank, the Monkey leaped up into his tree, safe and sound.

ਉਸ ਨੇ ਰੁੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਦੇਣੀ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਮੇਰੇ ਦੋਸਤ, ਦਿਲ ਕਦੇ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਟੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਨੇ ਭਲਾ? ਤੈਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਜੀਅ ਨਾਲ ਧੋਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਭਲਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ।"

"A heart cannot be left in a tree, my friend," he called down. "You should not have tried to trick someone who was kind to you."
