ਮੂਰਖ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਅਤੇ ਚਲਾਕ ਖਰਗੋਸ਼

ਇੱਕ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਉਹ ਜਿੰਨੇ ਜਾਨਵਰ ਖਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ, ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਵੱਧ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਜਾਨਵਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਡਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ।

Deep in a forest lived a fierce Lion. Every day he hunted and killed far more animals than he could ever eat. The animals were terrified.

At last they came to the Lion with a plan. "Great Lion," they said, "if you chase us all, soon none will be left. Let us send you one animal each day for your meal. Then you need not hunt at all."

ਆਲਸੀ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਇਆ। ਉਸਨੇ ਗਰਜ ਕੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਬਹੁਤ ਚੰਗਾ। ਪਰ ਜੇ ਇੱਕ ਵੀ ਦਿਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਲੰਘਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਂਗਾ।"

The lazy Lion liked this idea. "Very well," he growled. "But if even one day passes without my meal, I will hunt you all down."

So each day one animal walked sadly to the Lion. Then came the turn of a small, clever Rabbit. The Rabbit thought hard as he went, and he walked very, very slowly.

By the time he reached the Lion, it was late, and the Lion was roaring with hunger. "Why are you so late?" the Lion bellowed.

ਖਰਗੋਸ਼ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰਨਾ। ਇੱਥੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ, ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਲਿਆ। ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਜੰਗਲ ਦਾ ਅਸਲੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸਨੇ ਲਗਭਗ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖਾ ਹੀ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ!"

"Forgive me," said the Rabbit. "On my way here, another lion stopped me. He said he is the true king of this forest. He nearly ate me!"

ਸ਼ੇਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਗੁੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀ। "ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਸ਼ੇਰ? ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਦਿਖਾਓ!"

The Lion was furious. "Another lion? Show me at once!"

ਖਰਗੋਸ਼ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਖੂਹ ਕੋਲ ਲੈ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਲ ਇਸ਼ਾਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਉਹ ਉੱਥੇ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।"

The Rabbit led the Lion to an old well and pointed inside. "He lives down there," he said.

The Lion looked into the well and saw another lion staring back — his own reflection in the water. Thinking it was his rival, he roared. The reflection seemed to roar back. In a rage, the Lion leaped into the well to fight — and that was the end of him.

The clever little Rabbit hurried home, and the animals of the forest lived in peace.
