ਬੌਣੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੋਚੀ

ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ, ਇੱਕ ਗਰੀਬ ਮੋਚੀ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਕੋਲ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੰਨਾ ਹੀ ਚਮੜਾ ਬਚਿਆ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੱਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਆਖਰੀ ਜੋੜਾ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਚਮੜਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਕੱਟਿਆ, ਉਸਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਜ਼ 'ਤੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ, ਅਤੇ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੌਣ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ।

Once there was a poor shoemaker who had only enough leather left to make one last pair of shoes. He cut out the leather carefully, left it on his table, and went to bed feeling worried.

ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਉੱਠਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ! ਮੇਜ਼ 'ਤੇ ਜੁੱਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਜੋੜਾ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ, ਜੋ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਚਮਕ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਛੋਟੇ-ਛੋਟੇ ਟਾਂਕੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਟਾਂਕੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸਾਫ਼ ਸਨ।

When he woke in the morning, what a surprise! There on the table sat a beautiful pair of shoes, finished and shining. The tiny stitches were neater than any he had ever made.

ਉਸੇ ਦਿਨ, ਇੱਕ ਗਾਹਕ ਨੇ ਜੁੱਤੀਆਂ ਖਰੀਦ ਲਈਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਇੰਨੇ ਵਧੀਆ ਕੰਮ ਲਈ ਵਾਧੂ ਪੈਸੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਹੁਣ ਮੋਚੀ ਕੋਲ ਇੰਨੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਸਨ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਦੋ ਹੋਰ ਜੋੜੇ ਜੁੱਤੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਚਮੜਾ ਖਰੀਦ ਸਕੇ।

That very day, a customer bought the shoes and paid extra for such fine work. Now the shoemaker had enough money to buy leather for two more pairs.

ਉਸ ਰਾਤ ਉਸਨੇ ਚਮੜਾ ਕੱਟਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸੌਣ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ। ਅਤੇ ਸਵੇਰੇ, ਜੁੱਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਜੋੜੇ ਉਡੀਕ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ!

That night he cut the leather and went to bed. And in the morning, two perfect pairs of shoes were waiting!

ਇਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ, ਰਾਤੋਂ-ਰਾਤ। ਮੋਚੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਹੁਣ ਗਰੀਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ। ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਕੌਣ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ?

So it went, night after night. The shoemaker and his wife were no longer poor. But who could be helping them?

ਇੱਕ ਰਾਤ, ਉਹ ਦੇਖਣ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਪਰਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਲੁਕ ਗਏ। ਚੁੱਪ-ਚਾਪ, ਚੁੱਪ-ਚਾਪ, ਦੋ ਛੋਟੇ ਬੌਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਏ, ਜੋ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਹੱਥ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਕੋਈ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਕੰਬ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਕੱਟ-ਕੱਟ, ਠਕ-ਠਕ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਜੁੱਤੀਆਂ ਸਿਉਂਤੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੇਰ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ।

One night, they hid behind a curtain to watch. Tip-toe, tip-toe, in came two little elves, no bigger than your hand. They had no clothes at all, and they shivered as they worked. Snip, snip, tap, tap, they sewed the shoes and skipped away before dawn.

So the kind couple sewed tiny shirts, tiny trousers, and two tiny pairs of shoes. They laid the little clothes out on the table that night.

ਜਦੋਂ ਬੌਣਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਤੋਹਫ਼ੇ ਦੇਖੇ, ਉਹ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਨੱਚਣ ਲੱਗੇ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾਏ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ-ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ।

When the elves saw the gifts, they danced for joy! They pulled on their new clothes and skipped happily out the door.

ਮੋਚੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੇ ਬੌਣਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਰ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਫਿਰ ਕਦੇ ਗਰੀਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਏ। ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਦਿਆਲਤਾ ਵੰਡਣੀ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖੀ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦਿਆਲਤਾ ਵੰਡੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ।

The shoemaker and his wife never saw the elves again, but they were never poor again either. And they always remembered to share kindness, just as kindness had been shared with them.
