A kind woman who longed for a child planted a single magic seed. Up grew a flower with petals shut tight. When it opened with a soft pop, inside sat a tiny girl, no bigger than a thumb. The woman named her Thumbelina.

Thumbelina slept in a walnut shell and sailed across a bowl of water in a tulip petal. She sang in a sweet little voice, and everyone who heard her smiled.

One night a big bumpy toad hopped through the window and carried sleeping Thumbelina away to the river. But a friendly fish nibbled the leaf she sat upon, and away she floated to safety. "Thank you, kind fish," she called.

Summer passed, and cold winter came. Tiny Thumbelina shivered in the snow. A field mouse found her and gave her a warm home. "Stay with me, little one," said the mouse.

In the mouse's tunnel lay a swallow who looked very poorly and cold. Everyone thought he could not fly again. But gentle Thumbelina covered him with soft hay and warmed him day after day. Slowly the swallow grew strong once more.

"ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਇਆ," ਅਬਾਬੀਲ ਨੇ ਚੀਂ-ਚੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਿਹਾ। "ਹੁਣ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਮਦਦ ਕਰਨ ਦਿਓ। ਮੇਰੀ ਪਿੱਠ 'ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹੋ!"

"You saved me," chirped the swallow. "Now let me help you. Climb onto my back!"

Up, up they flew over fields and forests to a warm, sunny land full of flowers. There, on the largest blossom, sat a whole village of tiny people just like Thumbelina, with shimmering wings.

Thumbelina laughed with joy. They gave her a pair of silvery wings of her own. And there, among friends who were just her size, tiny Thumbelina lived happily ever after.
