In a box of toy soldiers, there was one made of tin who had only one leg, for the tin had run out as they made him. But he stood up just as straight and brave as all the rest.

On the table stood a little paper castle, and at its door danced a tiny paper dancer. She stood so lightly on one toe that the tin soldier thought she had only one leg too, just like him. "She is just like me," he thought. And he loved her with all his tin heart.

One windy day, the soldier tumbled off the windowsill. Down, down he fell to the street below. Plop! The rain washed him into the gutter, where two boys had made a little paper boat.
ਤੇਜ਼ ਵਗਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ 'ਤੇ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਟੀਨ ਦਾ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਦੂਰ ਵਹਿ ਤੁਰਿਆ। ਸਵਿਸ਼, ਸਵੂਸ਼! ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਡੋਲਿਆ। ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੋਇਆ। ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਛੋਟੀ ਬੰਦੂਕ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਸ ਕੇ ਫੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਤੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਰਿਹਾ।
Away sailed the brave tin soldier on the rushing water. Swish, swoosh! He never wobbled. He never cried. He held his small gun tight and stood up straight and steadfast.

The boat slipped into a dark drainpipe and out into a wide stream. Then, gulp! A big fish swallowed the tin soldier whole. But the soldier was not afraid. He simply waited, brave and patient, in the dark.
ਜਲਦੀ ਹੀ ਇੱਕ ਮਛੇਰੇ ਨੇ ਉਹੀ ਮੱਛੀ ਫੜੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੇਚ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਰਸੋਈਏ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਖਰੀਦਿਆ!
Soon a fisherman caught that very fish and sold it at the market. And who should buy it but the cook from the soldier's own house!
ਜਦੋਂ ਰਸੋਈਏ ਨੇ ਮੱਛੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਟਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਛੋਟਾ ਟੀਨ ਦਾ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਚਮਕਿਆ। "ਵਾਹ, ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਕਮਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ!" ਉਹ ਹੱਸੀ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਵਾਪਸ ਮੇਜ਼ 'ਤੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
When the cook cut open the fish, there gleamed the little tin soldier. "Well, I never!" she laughed, and she set him back on the table.

There stood the little paper dancer, still on her toe, waiting for him. The tin soldier's heart leaped with joy. He had come all the way home.
