ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਜੰਗਲੀ ਤਾਲਾਬ ਦੇ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਚਾਰ ਚੰਗੇ ਦੋਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ: ਇੱਕ ਹਿਰਨ, ਇੱਕ ਕਾਂ, ਇੱਕ ਚੂਹਾ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਕੱਛੂਕੁੰਮਾ। ਹਰ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਉਹ ਖ਼ਬਰਾਂ ਸਾਂਝੀਆਂ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਸਨ।
Beside a quiet forest pool lived four good friends: a Deer, a Crow, a Mouse, and a Tortoise. Every evening they met together to share news and keep each other company.
ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ, ਹਿਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ। ਤਿੰਨੋਂ ਦੋਸਤ ਚਿੰਤਤ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਕਾਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਉੱਡਿਆ ਦੇਖਣ ਲਈ ਅਤੇ ਜਲਦੀ ਹੀ ਦੂਰ ਹਿਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਿਆ, ਜੋ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ।
One day, the Deer did not come. The three friends grew worried. The Crow flew up high to look and soon spotted the Deer far away, caught fast in a hunter's net, struggling to get free.
ਕਾਂ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਸ ਆਇਆ। "ਛੇਤੀ ਕਰੋ!" ਉਸਨੇ ਚੂਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ। "ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੇਰੇ ਤਿੱਖੇ ਦੰਦ ਹੀ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।" ਕਾਂ ਛੋਟੇ ਚੂਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਨ ਕੋਲ ਜਿੰਨੀ ਤੇਜ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਉੱਡ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ, ਲੈ ਗਿਆ।
The Crow rushed back with the news. "Quick!" he said to the Mouse. "Only your sharp teeth can save him." The Crow carried the little Mouse to the Deer as fast as he could fly.

The Mouse set to work at once, gnawing at the ropes — nibble, nibble, nibble. Meanwhile the slow Tortoise had set off too, for he could not bear to be left behind while his friend was in danger.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਚੂਹੇ ਨੇ ਆਖਰੀ ਰੱਸੀ ਕੁਤਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਹਿਰਨ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰੀ ਵਾਪਸ ਆ ਗਿਆ। ਹਿਰਨ ਦਰੱਖਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੱਜ ਗਿਆ, ਕਾਂ ਉੱਡ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਚੂਹਾ ਇੱਕ ਮੋਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੜ ਗਿਆ। ਪਰ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਹੌਲੀ ਕੱਛੂਕੁੰਮਾ ਸਮੇਂ ਸਿਰ ਭੱਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰੀ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਬੋਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੁੱਕ ਲਿਆ।
Just as the Mouse chewed through the last rope and the Deer sprang free, the hunter came striding back. The Deer bounded into the trees, the Crow flew up, and the Mouse darted into a hole. But the poor slow Tortoise could not escape in time, and the hunter scooped him up in a sack.
ਤਿੰਨੋਂ ਦੋਸਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਚਲਾਕ ਯੋਜਨਾ ਬਣਾਈ। ਹਿਰਨ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੇਟ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਬਹਾਨਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਕਾਂ ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਬੈਠ ਗਿਆ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਚੁੰਝ ਮਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੋਵੇ। ਜਦੋਂ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰੀ ਨੇ "ਮਰਿਆ" ਹਿਰਨ ਦੇਖਿਆ, ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਬੋਰੀ ਸੁੱਟ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਭੱਜਿਆ।
The three friends would not abandon him. They made a clever plan. The Deer lay down in the open and pretended to be dead. The Crow perched on him as if pecking. When the hunter saw the "dead" deer, he dropped his sack and ran over to claim it.
ਜਿਸ ਪਲ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਹੋਇਆ, ਚੂਹੇ ਨੇ ਜਲਦੀ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਰੀ ਕੁਤਰ ਕੇ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੱਛੂਕੁੰਮੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਫਿਰ ਹਿਰਨ ਉੱਠ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ, ਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਾਂ-ਕਾਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰੋਂ ਦੋਸਤ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ।
The moment the hunter's back was turned, the Mouse quickly gnawed open the sack and freed the Tortoise. Then the Deer leaped up, the Crow cawed, and all four friends slipped away into the forest together.
