The Jackal and the Drum

Bilingual Punjabi + English Panchatantra Ages 4-8

A hungry Jackal was wandering through an empty field, searching for something to eat. He had not found a single morsel all day.

As evening came, a strong wind began to blow. Suddenly the Jackal heard a deep, booming sound. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The Jackal froze. His heart pounded. "What a huge and terrible animal that must be!" he thought. "A beast that loud could swallow me in one bite. I must run away at once!"

But as he turned to flee, his hunger made him stop and think. "Wait," he said to himself. "I have never run from a sound before knowing what it is. A brave creature finds out the truth before he is afraid. Let me at least take a look."

So, step by careful step, the Jackal crept toward the booming sound. He went under a tree, around a bush — and there he found it.

It was only an old drum, lying forgotten on the ground. Its skin was stretched tight, and whenever the wind blew the branches against it, the drum gave its great BOOM!

The Jackal laughed at himself. "So this is the terrible monster!" he said. "Nothing but a noisy old drum, with no teeth and no claws at all."

He sniffed around the drum, hoping there might be food inside. There was none — but the Jackal went on his way wiser than before, for he had learned that a loud noise is not always something to fear.
