Near an old ruined village lived a great many Mice. They had their homes and their families there, and they were happy.

One day, a herd of Elephants came tramping through on their way to a lake. Their huge feet crushed the little mouse holes, and many mice were hurt.

The Mice were frightened, for the Elephants would pass that way again. So the King of the Mice went bravely to the leader of the Elephants.

"Great Elephant," he squeaked, "you are so big that you do not even notice us, but your feet destroy our homes. Please walk by another path, and one day, perhaps, we small creatures may help you in return."

The big Elephant looked down kindly at the tiny Mouse. "How could you ever help us?" he thought. But he was gentle, so he agreed, and the Elephants took another path.

Some time later, hunters came to the forest. They dug deep pits and spread strong ropes, and they caught many of the Elephants in their nets. The poor Elephants pulled and pulled, but they could not get free, and they trumpeted in fear.

The leader of the Elephants remembered the little Mouse. He sent word, and at once thousands of Mice came running. With their small sharp teeth they began to gnaw the ropes — nibble, nibble, nibble — through the day and night.

By morning, every rope was chewed through, and all the Elephants were free.

"Thank you, little friends," said the great Elephant. "We will never again think any creature too small to matter."
