ਇੱਕ ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਰ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਵਧੀਆ, ਤੰਦਰੁਸਤ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਖਰੀਦੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੋਢਿਆਂ 'ਤੇ ਚੁੱਕ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ-ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਲ ਪਿਆ।

A traveller went to the market and bought a fine, healthy goat. He lifted it onto his shoulders and set off happily for home.

Now, three lazy tricksters had been watching. They wanted the goat for themselves, so they came up with a sly plan. They spread out along the road, one after another, and waited.

As the traveller walked along, the first trickster stepped up to him, looking puzzled. "Friend," he said, "why are you carrying that dirty dog on your shoulders?"

"ਕੁੱਤਾ?" ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਰ ਹੱਸਿਆ। "ਇਹ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਵਧੀਆ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਹੈ!" ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਅੱਗੇ ਤੁਰ ਪਿਆ।

"Dog?" laughed the traveller. "This is no dog. It is a fine goat!" And he walked on.

A little farther down the road, the second trickster met him. He frowned and shook his head. "Sir, why does a grown man carry a dog upon his shoulders? People will laugh at you."

The traveller stopped, feeling a little uneasy. "Strange," he thought. "Now two men have said the same thing." But still he walked on.

Soon the third trickster appeared. "Oh, sir," he said, wrinkling his nose, "put down that dog at once! It is shameful to carry such a creature."

ਹੁਣ ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਕਾ ਯਕੀਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। "ਤਿੰਨ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਹੈ," ਉਸਨੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ। "ਇਹ ਸੱਚ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਧੋਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਗਲਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਖਰੀਦ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ!" ਆਪਣੀ ਉਲਝਣ ਵਿੱਚ, ਉਸਨੇ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਮਿੰਦਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜਲਦੀ ਨਾਲ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ।

Now the traveller was sure of it. "Three different people have told me it is a dog," he thought. "It must be true. Perhaps I was tricked at the market and bought a dog by mistake!" In his confusion, he set the goat down and hurried away, embarrassed.

The three tricksters laughed, picked up the fine goat, and led it off to enjoy a feast — all because one man let others talk him out of what he plainly knew was true.
