ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿਨ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਸੀ। All day long, he leaned on someone.

ਤੁਰਦਿਆਂ, ਉਹ ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਉਂਗਲ ਫੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ। When he walked, he held Mummy's finger.

ਥੱਕ ਕੇ, ਉਹ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਮੋਢੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਿਰ ਰੱਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ। When he was tired, he rested his head on Daddy's shoulder.

ਜਦੋਂ ਡਰ ਲੱਗਦਾ, ਉਹ ਆਖਦਾ, "ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਲਓ!" When he was scared, he said, "Hold me close!"

ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ। And someone always held him close.

ਇੱਕ ਰਾਤ ਵੀਰ ਦੀ ਅੱਖ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਗਈ। One night, Veer woke up.

ਚਾਰੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਸੀ। It was dark all around.

ਕੋਈ ਉਂਗਲ ਨਹੀਂ। ਕੋਈ ਮੋਢਾ ਨਹੀਂ। No finger to hold. No shoulder to lean on.

ਵੀਰ ਨੇ ਹੌਲੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਆਖਿਆ, "ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਲਓ..." Veer whispered, "Hold me close..."

ਪਰ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। But in the dark, there was no one to hold him close.

ਫਿਰ ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਆਏ ਤੇ ਕੋਲ ਬੈਠ ਗਏ। Then Mummy came and sat beside him.

"ਵੀਰ," ਉਹ ਬੋਲੇ, "ਇੱਕ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।" "Veer," she said, "there is One who is always holding us close."

"ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਲ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਓਦੋਂ ਵੀ।" "Even in the dark. Even when no one is near."

"ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ।" "That One is Waheguru."

ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਬੋਲ ਗਾਏ: Softly, Mummy sang the words of Guru Ji:

ਵੀਰ ਸੋਚਣ ਲੱਗਾ। Veer thought about this.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ — ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਵਰਗਾ, ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਵਰਗਾ, ਸਭ ਵਰਗਾ — ਇੱਕੋ ਵੇਲੇ। Waheguru — like Mummy, like Daddy, like everyone — all at once.

ਉਹਨੇ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਮੀਟ ਲਈਆਂ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਖਿਆ, "ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਲਓ।" He closed his eyes and said in his heart, "Waheguru, hold me close."

ਤੇ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਾ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੱਡਾ ਸਾਰਾ, ਨਿੱਘਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੋਵੇ। And it felt as if a great, warm support was holding him in an embrace.

ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੁਣ ਡਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। The dark did not feel scary anymore.

ਵੀਰ ਸੌਂ ਗਿਆ — ਨਿੱਘੇ ਕਲਾਵੇ ਵਿੱਚ, ਸਾਰੀ ਰਾਤ। Veer fell asleep — held close, all night long.
