Little Veer loves to ask — for a biscuit, for a shoulder-ride, for one more story. But on a rainy morning, the one thing he asks for again and again just won't come. His mum shows him the One we can always ask — and how, even when the rain won't stop, Waheguru can fill our heart with a warm, happy feeling. A gentle first taste of Guru Arjan Dev Ji's shabad ਜੋ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਤੇ, told in Punjabi and English to read together.

The Boy Who Loved to Ask — ਵੀਰ ਅਜੇ ਨਿੱਕਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਤੇ ਵੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਿੱਕੀਆਂ-ਨਿੱਕੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਮੰਗਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਸੰਦ ਸੀ। "ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਬਿਸਕੁਟ ਦਿਓ!" "ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੋਢਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਚੁੱਕ ਲਓ!" "ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਾਓ!" ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਵਾਰ, ਜੋ ਉਹ ਮੰਗਦਾ, ਉਹਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ।

ਵੀਰ ਅਜੇ ਨਿੱਕਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਸੀ। Veer was still very little.

ਤੇ ਵੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਿੱਕੀਆਂ-ਨਿੱਕੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਮੰਗਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਸੰਦ ਸੀ। And Veer loved to ask for things.

"ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਬਿਸਕੁਟ ਦਿਓ!" "Mummy, give me a biscuit!"

"ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੋਢਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਚੁੱਕ ਲਓ!" "Daddy, lift me up on your shoulders!"

"ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਾਓ!" "Tell me one more story!"

ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਵਾਰ, ਜੋ ਉਹ ਮੰਗਦਾ, ਉਹਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ। And most of the time, what he asked for, he got.

The Rainy Morning — ਇੱਕ ਸਵੇਰ ਵੀਰ ਪਾਰਕ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। "ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ, ਪਾਰਕ ਚੱਲੀਏ! ਮੈਂ ਝੂਲੇ ਝੂਲਣੇ ਨੇ।" ਪਰ ਬਾਹਰ ਮੀਂਹ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। "ਅੱਜ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪੁੱਤ," ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਬੋਲੇ। "ਵੇਖ, ਕਿੰਨਾ ਮੀਂਹ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।" ਵੀਰ ਨੇ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਕਿਹਾ, ਪਰ ਮੀਂਹ ਨਾ ਹਟਿਆ। ਉਹਦਾ ਮਨ ਉਦਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।

The Rainy Morning

ਇੱਕ ਸਵੇਰ ਵੀਰ ਪਾਰਕ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। One morning, Veer wanted to go to the park.

"ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ, ਪਾਰਕ ਚੱਲੀਏ! ਮੈਂ ਝੂਲੇ ਝੂਲਣੇ ਨੇ।" "Mummy, let's go to the park! I want to go on the swings."

ਪਰ ਬਾਹਰ ਮੀਂਹ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। But outside, the rain was falling.

"ਅੱਜ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪੁੱਤ," ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਬੋਲੇ। "ਵੇਖ, ਕਿੰਨਾ ਮੀਂਹ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।" "Not today, my dear," said Mummy. "Look how much it's raining."

ਵੀਰ ਨੇ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਕਿਹਾ, ਪਰ ਮੀਂਹ ਨਾ ਹਟਿਆ। Veer asked and asked, but the rain did not stop.

ਉਹਦਾ ਮਨ ਉਦਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। His heart felt sad.

The One We Can Always Ask — ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਵੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਗੋਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਿਠਾ ਲਿਆ। "ਵੀਰ," ਉਹ ਬੋਲੇ, "ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਵੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਮੰਗ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ।" "ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਹਦੇ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।" "ਤੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਜੋ ਅਸੀਂ ਮੰਗ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਹੈ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਮਨ।" ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਬੋਲ ਗਾਏ:

ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਵੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਗੋਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਿਠਾ ਲਿਆ। Mummy sat Veer in her lap.

"ਵੀਰ," ਉਹ ਬੋਲੇ, "ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਵੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਮੰਗ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ।" "Veer," she said, "there is One we can always ask."

"ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਹਦੇ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।" "That One is Waheguru. Whatever we ask from Him, He gives us."

"ਤੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਜੋ ਅਸੀਂ ਮੰਗ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਹੈ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਮਨ।" "And the best thing we can ask for is a calm heart."

ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਬੋਲ ਗਾਏ: Softly, Mummy sang the words of Guru Ji:

ਜੋ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਤੇ ਸੋਈ ਸੋਈ ਦੇਵੈ ॥

Whatever we ask from Waheguru, that is what He gives us.

What Waheguru Gave — ਵੀਰ ਨੇ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਮੀਟੀਆਂ। ਉਹਨੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਖਿਆ, "ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ, ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਕਰ ਦਿਓ।" ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਉਹਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇੱਕ ਨਿੱਘ ਭਰ ਗਿਆ। ਮੀਂਹ ਤਾਂ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਵੀਰ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਹੁਣ ਉਦਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਖਿੜਕੀ ਕੋਲ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੂੰਦਾਂ ਵੇਖਣ ਲੱਗਾ ਤੇ ਹੱਸ ਪਿਆ। ਜੋ ਉਹਨੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਮੰਗਿਆ ਸੀ, ਉਹ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ — ਇੱਕ ਖੁਸ਼, ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਮਨ।

What Waheguru Gave

ਵੀਰ ਨੇ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਮੀਟੀਆਂ। Veer closed his eyes.

ਉਹਨੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਖਿਆ, "ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ, ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਕਰ ਦਿਓ।" He said in his heart, "Waheguru, please make my heart calm."

ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਉਹਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇੱਕ ਨਿੱਘ ਭਰ ਗਿਆ। Slowly, a warmth filled up inside him.

ਮੀਂਹ ਤਾਂ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਵੀਰ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਹੁਣ ਉਦਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। The rain was still falling, but Veer's heart was not sad anymore.

ਉਹ ਖਿੜਕੀ ਕੋਲ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੂੰਦਾਂ ਵੇਖਣ ਲੱਗਾ ਤੇ ਹੱਸ ਪਿਆ। He sat by the window watching the raindrops, and he smiled.

ਜੋ ਉਹਨੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਮੰਗਿਆ ਸੀ, ਉਹ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ — ਇੱਕ ਖੁਸ਼, ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਮਨ। What he had asked from Waheguru, he received — a happy, calm heart.
