Even This Is a Gift
Hungry little Veer is all set to dig into his dinner — but Daddy gently says, "wait, let's remember where this comes from." Together they notice the sun, the rain, the earth and all the hands behind the food, and that every bit of it is a gift from Waheguru, the Great Giver. Veer folds his hands and says thank you before he eats. A first taste of gratitude, from Guru Raam Daas Ji's line ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਖਾਵਣਾ, told in Punjabi and English to read together.

Dinner Time!
It was evening, and Veer was very hungry.
On the table, tasty food was ready.
Veer quickly reached out to eat.

Wait a Moment
"Wait a moment, Veer," said Daddy gently.
"Before we eat, let's think — where did all this come from?"
Veer stopped and looked at his food.

We Eat What He Gives
"In this food is the sun's warmth, the rain's water, and the earth's soil."
"So many hands grew it and cooked it."
"And all of it is a gift from Waheguru, the Great Giver."
"We eat whatever He gives us."
Softly, Daddy sang the words of Guru Ji:
You are the Giver, the Great Giver; we eat whatever You give us.

Thank You, Waheguru
Veer folded his hands and closed his eyes.
"Thank you, Waheguru, for this food."
Then he ate with delight — and today the food tasted even nicer.
From that day on, Veer always thanked Waheguru before eating.

About this story
The line Daddy sings — ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਖਾਵਣਾ — is from a pauri by Guru Raam Daas Ji in Raag Sorath, on Ang 652 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Guru Ji calls Waheguru the ਦਾਤਾਰ — the Great Giver — and reminds us that everything we have and eat is His gift. This gentle story turns that into a first idea of gratitude for very young children: a moment before a meal to notice that even an everyday dinner is a gift worth a thank-you.
