A simple bilingual retelling of Margery Williams's 1922 classic for young readers: a velveteen rabbit, the boy Kabir who loves him, and the old cloth horse Nani stitched, who explains what it means to become Real.

, । , ।

Once upon a time, there was a toy rabbit made of velveteen. When he was new, he was splendid.

He was fat and soft, just as a rabbit should be. His coat had brown and white spots. He had thread whiskers, and his ears were lined with pink silk.

On Kabir's birthday morning, the Rabbit sat on top of the pile of presents, with a bright ribbon round his neck. He looked lovely.

Kabir played with him for two whole hours. Then the aunts and uncles came for the party. There was wrapping paper to rip and boxes to open, and in all the excitement, the Rabbit was forgotten.

After that, he lived in the toy cupboard or on the bedroom floor. Nobody thought about him very much.

The Rabbit was shy. The battery toys were very proud. They beeped and flashed and buzzed, and they looked down on everyone else.

"We are the newest toys," they said. "We are almost real!"

The little Rabbit had no buttons and no lights. He was just stuffed with cotton. He didn't even know that real rabbits lived in the world. Next to the shiny toys, he felt very plain.

Chapter 2: Nani's Cloth Horse illustration 1

Long ago, Nani stitched the Cloth Horse from old scraps of fabric. She made him for Kabir's mum, when Mum was a little girl. He was the oldest toy in the room.

His colours had faded, and you could see his stitches. Most of the wool in his tail was gone. But he was very wise.

He had seen many battery toys arrive and show off. Then their batteries ran out, or they broke, and they were thrown away. He knew they were only toys.

"What is REAL?" the Rabbit asked him one day. "Does it mean having buttons and lights inside you?"

"Real isn't how you are made," said the Cloth Horse. "It's something that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."

" ?" ।

"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.

The Cloth Horse always told the truth. "Sometimes," he said. "But when you are Real, you don't mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once," asked the Rabbit, "or bit by bit?"

"Bit by bit," said the Cloth Horse. "It takes a long time. By the time you are Real, most of your fur has been hugged off. Your eyes come loose, and you look very shabby."

"But that doesn't matter at all," he went on. "Once you are Real, you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

"Are you Real?" asked the Rabbit. The Cloth Horse only smiled.

"Kabir's mum made me Real, when she was a little girl," he said. "That was many years ago. But once you are Real, it lasts for always."

The Rabbit sighed. He wanted to be Real. But he didn't want to lose his whiskers or look shabby. He wished he could be Real without all that.

That was a wonderful summer! Behind the house there was a little wood. On long summer evenings, Kabir went there to play, and he always took the Rabbit.

Before running off to play, Kabir made the Rabbit a cosy nest in the tall ferns.

One evening, as the Rabbit sat there alone, two strange creatures crept out of the ferns. They were rabbits like him, but soft and furry and brand new!

They had no stitches at all. When they moved, they stretched long and thin, then bunched up round and fat. The Rabbit looked hard for their battery switch, but he couldn't find one.

"Why don't you get up and play with us?" one of them asked.

"I don't feel like it," said the Rabbit. He didn't want them to know that he couldn't move by himself.

"It's easy!" said the wild rabbit. He gave a big hop sideways and stood up on his back legs. "Can you hop on your back legs?"

But wild rabbits have sharp eyes. "He hasn't got any back legs!" one of them called out, and he laughed.

"I have!" cried the little Rabbit. "I'm sitting on them!"

"Then show me, like this!" said the wild rabbit. He spun round and danced until the little Rabbit felt dizzy.

"I don't like dancing," said the Rabbit. But inside, he was longing to dance. He would have given anything to jump about like them.

The wild rabbit came very close. His whiskers brushed the Rabbit's ear. Then he wrinkled his nose and jumped back.

"He doesn't smell right!" he said. "He isn't a rabbit at all! He isn't real!"

"I am Real!" said the little Rabbit. "Kabir said so!" And he nearly cried.

Just then, Kabir came running past. With a flash of white tails, the two wild rabbits were gone.

"Tomorrow we're going to the seaside, so you can get strong again," Mum told Kabir. Kabir clapped his hands.
