How Boora Became Baba Buddha Ji
Bilingual Punjabi + English From Sikh history: Baba Buddha Ji and Guru Nanak Dev Ji All ages
Boora noticed things: an army cutting green crops with the ripe, small twigs catching fire before big logs. His question took him to Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who gave him a new name, Baba Buddha Ji.
Long ago, in the village of Kathu Nangal, there lived a boy named Boora. His father was Suggha Ji, and his mother was Mata Gauran Ji.
Like the other children of the village, Boora took the family's cows and buffaloes out to the fields. While they grazed, he watched the world around him, and he thought about what he saw.

One day an army came through the village. The soldiers cut down the crops in the fields. They didn't stop to look which crops were ripe and golden and which were still green and young. They cut them all.

On another day, Boora watched his mother light the chulha. First she put in the small, thin twigs. Then she laid the big, heavy logs on top. Boora watched the flames. The small twigs caught fire first.

Boora grew quiet and thoughtful. The green crops had been cut along with the ripe ones. The small twigs had caught fire before the big logs. Maybe, he thought, good things are not only for when we are grown up. Maybe the time to begin is now. But begin what? And how?
Then word came that Guru Nanak Dev Ji had come and was staying near Kathu Nangal. Boora, twelve years old, filled a bowl with cool milk and went for Guru Ji's darshan.

He placed the milk before Guru Ji, folded his hands and said, "O Deen Dayal, please bless me with a teaching, so that I can walk the right path from today."
Guru Ji looked at him with wonder. "Child," He said, "this is your age for playing and running about. How has such a big thought come to you so young?"

So Boora told Him about the soldiers and the green crops, and about his mother's chulha and the small twigs that caught fire first. "Good things don't have to wait until we are old," he said. "Even a child can begin. So please show me the path of remembering Waheguru, starting now."

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was very pleased. "Though you are a child," He said, "you speak with the wisdom of a bazurg. You are not a child at all. You are Buddha, a wise elder!"

From that day on, he was known as Baba Buddha Ji. And Guru Ji blessed him with the gift of Naam, which he kept close all his life.

If you ever walk the parkarma around the sarovar at Sri Harmandir Sahib, look for an old ber tree. It is called Ber Baba Buddha Ji. Under that tree Baba Ji used to sit and look after the seva of the sarovar: the same Baba Ji who, as a child, watched the small twigs catch fire in his mother's chulha.
