The Night They Left Sri Anandpur Sahib
Bilingual Punjabi + English From Sikh history: Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the Guru Parivar All ages
After months of hunger, the Sikhs were promised safe passage out of Sri Anandpur Sahib. Guru Ji knew the promises would not hold, but on a freezing night of Poh everyone left together, and kept going when the promises broke.
For many months, no food had come into Sri Anandpur Sahib. Armies sat around the city on every side, and nothing could get through. Inside the fort of Sri Anandgarh Sahib were Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Mata Gujri Ji, the four Sahibzade and a few hundred Sikhs.
The langar ran low, and then lower still, until each Sikh had just one fistful of chickpeas a day. It was very hard, and some of the Sikhs began to feel they could not hold on much longer.
Then a letter came in the emperor's name, sent with a Quran. It promised that if Guru Ji left Sri Anandpur Sahib, no one would be harmed. The hill chiefs made the same promise, and swore by what they held most sacred.
Guru Ji knew these promises could not be trusted, and He wanted to wait a little longer. But the Sikhs went to Mata Gujri Ji, and she asked Guru Ji to leave. So Guru Ji agreed.
Some of the Sikhs said Guru Ji and His family should go on ahead, to be safe. Guru Ji said no. He would not go and leave His Sikhs alone. Everyone would leave together, and no one would stop along the way.
They chose a night in the month of Poh when the cold was so bitter that the armies outside were not likely to be awake. The gates opened, and the whole caravan, the vaheer, slipped quietly out into the dark: Guru Ji, Mata Gujri Ji, Baba Ajit Singh Ji, Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, Baba Zorawar Singh Ji, Baba Fateh Singh Ji, and the Sikhs all around them like a shield.
They went without a sound, past Kiratpur Sahib, towards the Sarsa river. But someone saw them and ran to tell the armies. The promises were broken, and the armies came after them.
Ahead, the Sarsa was in flood. Winter rain was falling, and the river rushed past, loud and ice-cold. Behind them, the armies were coming closer.
Guru Ji gave His orders. Brave jathas of Sikhs would stand firm and hold the armies back while the others crossed. Bhai Uday Singh Ji held one place. Bhai Jiwan Singh Ji held another. Years before, when his name was Bhai Jaita Ji, he was the one who carried Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's Sees all the way from Delhi to Anandpur. When he took Amrit, he became Bhai Jiwan Singh Ji. Because they stood firm, the sangat could step into the river.
The crossing was very hard. The current was strong, and the water was so cold that it made the body numb. But the Sikhs kept going, one step and then the next.
On the far side of the Sarsa, the paths divided. Mata Gujri Ji went one way with Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji. Guru Ji, with Baba Ajit Singh Ji, Baba Jujhar Singh Ji and a jatha of Sikhs, went on towards Ropar. Many precious writings by the poets of Guru Ji's darbar were lost to the river that night.
It was a long, cold, dark night, and the river was loud. But through the cold and the dark, they kept going, on towards the morning.
