After Chamkaur, soldiers were searching every village for Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Two brothers of Machhiwara who loved Him put their own safety aside, lifted His bed onto their shoulders, and carried Him to a safe place as the Pir of Uch.

In the dark of night, Guru Gobind Singh Ji left the garhi at Chamkaur. He walked through thorny bushes, guided by the stars, towards Machhiwara. By the time He reached it, His clothes were torn, His feet were sore, and He had not eaten for a long time.

Near Machhiwara, three of His Singhs, Bhai Daya Singh Ji, Bhai Dharam Singh Ji and Bhai Man Singh Ji, found Him resting in a garden. In Machhiwara, a Sikh named Gulaba took them all to his home. He quietly made a place for them in an upper room, so that Guru Ji could rest safely.

But soldiers were searching village after village. The governor of Sirhind had announced a reward for anyone who helped catch Guru Ji. Machhiwara was not far from Sirhind, and it was not safe.

In Machhiwara lived two Pathan brothers, Bhai Nabi Khan and Bhai Ghani Khan. They traded horses, bringing them from far away to sell to Guru Ji, and they were His devotees. When they heard He was there, they came for His darshan and offered to help.

Together they made a plan. People in that region honoured the pirs of Uch, who left their hair open beneath their head coverings and were carried from village to village on a bed by their followers. The brothers took Guru Ji to their own home, where cloth was dyed in a big pot to make the pir's clothes. Guru Ji and the Singhs put them on and left their hair open beneath their dastars. Guru Ji sat on a bed, and Bhai Nabi Khan, Bhai Ghani Khan, Bhai Dharam Singh Ji and Bhai Man Singh Ji carried it. Bhai Daya Singh Ji walked beside them, waving a chaur of peacock feathers.

Wherever they went, the brothers told people, "This is the Pir of Uch." The brothers were well known and respected, so people believed them.

At the village of Lall, soldiers stopped them. Was this pir really Guru Gobind Singh Ji? Guru Ji spoke with them in Persian. Qazi Mir Mohammad of Saloh, who had taught Guru Ji Persian when He was a child, recognised Him. But he told the soldiers, "He truly is the Pir of Uch." And the soldiers let them go.

For several days they went on like this. Then at Alamgir a Sikh gave Guru Ji a horse, and Guru Ji left the bed and rode on. When it was time for the brothers to go home, Guru Ji said farewell to them with great respect. He gave them a letter praising their seva, in which He called them "my sons" and told the Khalsa Panth to honour them. They had cared for Guru Ji when soldiers everywhere were searching for Him, without a thought for their own safety.
