ਨਿੱਕੀ ਚੂਜ਼ੀ

ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਖਿੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਧੁੱਪ ਸੀ। ਨਿੱਕੀ ਚੂਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਹੜੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਫਰੋਲ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਅਚਾਨਕ ਰੁੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਢੱਠਾ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਫਲ਼ 'ਠੱਕ' ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਜਿਆ।

One sunny day, Chicken Little was scratching in the yard when an acorn dropped from a tree and bonked her on the head.

"ਹਾਏ ਰੱਬਾ!" ਉਹ ਘਬਰਾ ਕੇ ਬੋਲੀ। "ਅਸਮਾਨ ਡਿੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਏ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਛੇਤੀ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ!"

"Oh my!" she cried. "The sky is falling! I must tell the king!"

ਉਹ ਭੱਜੀ-ਭੱਜੀ ਸੜਕ ਵੱਲ ਤੁਰ ਪਈ। ਅੱਗੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੈਨੀ ਪੈਨੀ ਮੁਰਗੀ ਮਿਲੀ।

Off she hurried down the road. Soon she met Henny Penny.

"ਅਸਮਾਨ ਡਿੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਏ!" ਨਿੱਕੀ ਚੂਜ਼ੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ। "ਚੱਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ, ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਣ ਚੱਲੀਏ!"

"The sky is falling!" said Chicken Little. "Come with me to tell the king!"

ਹੈਨੀ ਪੈਨੀ ਵੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਭੱਜ ਤੁਰੀ। ਅੱਗੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਕਾਕੀ ਲਾਕੀ ਕੁੱਕੜ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੇ।

So Henny Penny ran along too. Next they met Cocky Locky.

"ਅਸਮਾਨ ਡਿੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਏ!" ਉਹ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਚੀਕੇ। "ਤੂੰ ਵੀ ਚੱਲ ਸਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ, ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਣ ਚੱਲੀਏ!"

"The sky is falling!" they cried. "Come with us to tell the king!"

ਕਾਕੀ ਲਾਕੀ ਵੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦੌੜ ਪਿਆ। ਫਿਰ ਉਹ ਡੱਕੀ ਲੱਕੀ ਬੱਤਖ਼ ਅਤੇ ਗੂਸੀ ਲੂਸੀ ਹੰਸਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੇ, ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਖੰਭ ਫੜਫੜਾਉਂਦੇ ਤੇ ਰੌਲ਼ਾ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਇੱਕ ਕਤਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੱਜਣ ਲੱਗੇ।

So Cocky Locky ran along too. Then they met Ducky Lucky and Goosey Loosey, and they all ran together in a flapping, squawking line.

ਰਾਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਉੱਲੂ ਮਿਲਿਆ, ਜੋ ਟਾਹਣੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਬੈਠਾ ਆਰਾਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ।

Soon they met a wise old owl resting on a branch.

"ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਇੰਨੇ ਘਬਰਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਕਿੱਧਰ ਭੱਜੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?" ਉੱਲੂ ਨੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ।

"Where are you all rushing in such a fright?" asked the owl.

"ਅਸਮਾਨ ਡਿੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਏ!" ਸਾਰੇ ਇੱਕੋ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੋਲੇ। "ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਟੁਕੜਾ ਨਿੱਕੀ ਚੂਜ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਵੱਜਿਆ ਏ!"

"The sky is falling!" they all cried at once. "A piece hit Chicken Little on the head!"

"ਅੱਛਾ, ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਏ?" ਉੱਲੂ ਨੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਹਾ। "ਚਲੋ ਚੱਲ ਕੇ ਦੇਖੀਏ ਭਲਾ ਇਹ ਡਿੱਗਦਾ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈ।"

"Is that so?" said the owl kindly. "Let us go and look at this falling sky."

ਉਹ ਵਾਪਸ ਵਿਹੜੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਏ। ਉੱਥੇ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ 'ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਭੂਰਾ ਫਲ਼ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ।

They went back to the yard. There on the ground lay a small brown acorn.

"ਓਹੋ, ਇਹ ਕੋਈ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਦਾ ਟੁਕੜਾ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਏ," ਉੱਲੂ ਨੇ ਮੁਸਕਰਾ ਕੇ ਕਿਹਾ। "ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਬਲੂਤ ਦੇ ਰੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਨਿੱਕਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਫਲ਼ ਏ। ਅਸਮਾਨ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਥਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਠੀਕ-ਠਾਕ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਏ।"

"Why, this is no piece of sky," said the owl with a smile. "This is only an acorn that fell from the oak tree. The sky is exactly where it should be."

ਨਿੱਕੀ ਚੂਜ਼ੀ ਨੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਦੇਖਿਆ। ਅਸਮਾਨ ਨੀਲਾ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਸੀ, ਉਹ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਡਿੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ। ਫਿਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਖਿੜ-ਖਿੜਾ ਕੇ ਹੱਸ ਪਏ!

Chicken Little looked up. The sky was blue and calm and not falling at all. How they all laughed!

"ਅੱਗੇ ਤੋਂ," ਉੱਲੂ ਨੇ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ, "ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਗੱਲ 'ਤੇ ਯਕੀਨ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਦੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਕਰੋ।"

"Next time," said the owl, "look closely before you believe such a story."

ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੋਸਤ ਮਿੱਠੀ-ਮਿੱਠੀ ਧੁੱਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ-ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਘਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਆਏ।

And the friends all walked home together, safe and happy in the warm sunshine.
