Long ago, a little girl named Rapunzel was taken away to live in a tall, tall tower by a sour old woman called Mother Gothel. The tower had no door and no stairs, only one tiny window at the very top.

Each day Mother Gothel would stand below and call, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!" Then Rapunzel would toss her long braid out the window, and the old woman would climb up.

One day a kind young man heard her singing as he rode through the forest. He stopped beneath the tower, amazed. "What a beautiful song," he whispered.

He waited, hidden, until he heard Mother Gothel's call. Now he knew the secret! When the old woman had gone, he stepped out and called gently, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair."

Mother Gothel returned to find the tower empty and could only grumble. But Rapunzel and her friend were already far away, free and happy, with the whole wide world before them.
