The Ugly Duckling
Bilingual Punjabi + English Hans Christian Andersen Ages 4-8
On a sunny farm by the river, a mother duck waited for her eggs to hatch. Crack, crack, crack! Out tumbled six fluffy yellow ducklings. Then came one more from the biggest egg. He was grey and large and clumsy.
" ਵੇਖਣ !"
"How odd he looks," the other animals whispered. "What an ugly duckling!"
The poor little duckling felt sad. The hens pecked at him. The other ducklings would not play. So one quiet morning, he waddled away to find a place where he might belong.
He walked through tall reeds. Swish, swish. He swam across cold ponds. Splash, splash. Wherever he went, the other birds said, "You do not look like us. Go away."
The winter grew icy and lonely. The little bird hid among the rushes and dreamed of friends.
At last, spring came. The sun grew warm and the flowers opened. On the river he saw three beautiful white swans gliding by. Their necks were long and graceful.
"They are so lovely," he thought. "Perhaps they will let me near, just for a moment."
He bent his head shyly toward the water. And there, in the shining river, he saw his own reflection. He was not a grey, ugly duckling at all. He had grown into a beautiful white swan!
The other swans swam close and welcomed him. "Come, friend, swim with us," they said gently.
His heart filled with joy. He flapped his strong wings and glided beside them. At last he had found where he belonged.
And the children by the river clapped and cried, "Look! The most beautiful swan of all!"
