ਮਛੇਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ

ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਮਛੇਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਝੌਂਪੜੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ, ਮਛੇਰੇ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਮੱਛੀ ਫੜੀ ਜੋ ਬੋਲ ਸਕਦੀ ਸੀ!

Once a fisherman and his wife lived in a tiny old cottage by the sea. One day, the fisherman caught a fish that could speak!

"ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਦਿਓ," ਮੱਛੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ। "ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਜਾਦੂਈ ਮੱਛੀ ਹਾਂ।"

"Please let me go," said the fish. "I am a magic fish."

ਦਿਆਲੂ ਮਛੇਰੇ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਇੱਛਾ ਮੰਗਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਸੀ! ਜਾਓ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਆਰਾਮਦਾਇਕ ਨਵਾਂ ਘਰ ਮੰਗੋ।"

The kind fisherman set it free at once. When he told his wife, she said, "You should have made a wish! Go and ask for a cosy new house."

ਮਛੇਰਾ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ, "ਜਾਦੂਈ ਮੱਛੀ, ਮੇਰੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਇੱਕ ਆਰਾਮਦਾਇਕ ਘਰ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।" ਛੱਪਾਕ! ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਘਰ ਗਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਆਰਾਮਦਾਇਕ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਘਰ ਉਡੀਕ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਦੇਰ ਖੁਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੀ।

The fisherman went to the shore and called, "Magic fish, my wife wishes for a cosy house." Splash! When he went home, a snug little house stood waiting. But his wife was not happy for long.

"ਵਾਪਸ ਜਾਓ," ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ। "ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਮਹਿਲ ਮੰਗੋ।" ਅਤੇ ਮਛੇਰੇ ਨੇ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ। ਛੱਪਾਕ! ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਮਹਿਲ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੋਇਆ।

"Go back," she said. "Ask for a grand palace." And so the fisherman did. Splash! A grand palace appeared.

ਪਰ ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਹੋਰ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ। "ਮੈਂ ਰਾਣੀ ਬਣਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ!" ਉਹ ਚੀਕੀ। ਅਤੇ ਛੱਪਾਕ, ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਰਾਣੀ ਬਣ ਗਈ। ਫਿਰ, "ਮੈਂ ਸੂਰਜ ਅਤੇ ਚੰਦਰਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਮੌਸਮ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ!"

But still the wife wanted more. "I want to be queen!" she cried. And splash, she became a queen. Then, "I want to command the sun and the moon and the weather!"

ਮਛੇਰਾ ਕੰਬ ਗਿਆ। "ਪਤਨੀ, ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ, ਇਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਮੰਗਣਾ ਹੈ।" ਪਰ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਪੈਰ ਪਟਕਿਆ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ।

The fisherman trembled. "Wife, please, this is too much to ask." But she stamped her foot, so off he went.

ਅਸਮਾਨ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਉੱਚੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ। "ਜਾਦੂਈ ਮੱਛੀ," ਉਸਨੇ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ, "ਮੇਰੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਸੂਰਜ, ਚੰਦਰਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਮੌਸਮ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।"

The sky turned dark and the waves grew tall. "Magic fish," he called, "my wife wishes to command the sun, the moon, and the weather."

ਮੱਛੀ ਗੁੱਸੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਉੱਪਰ ਉੱਠੀ। "ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ," ਮੱਛੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ। "ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇ ਸਕਦਾ। ਹੁਣ ਘਰ ਜਾਓ।"

The fish rose up from the angry sea. "She wishes for far too much," said the fish. "No one can command the sky. Go home now."

ਮਛੇਰਾ ਹਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੱਜਿਆ। ਮਹਿਲ ਗਾਇਬ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਤਾਜ ਗਾਇਬ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਉੱਥੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ, ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਛੋਟੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਝੌਂਪੜੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੜ੍ਹੀ ਸੀ, ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਸੀ।

The fisherman hurried home through the wind and rain. The palace was gone. The crown was gone. There stood his wife, in their tiny old cottage by the sea, just as it had been before.

ਅਤੇ ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹੋ? ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਪਤਨੀ ਨੇ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਖੁਸ਼ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਿਆ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਛੋਟੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਝੌਂਪੜੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ਸਾਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਰਹੇ।

And do you know? After that, the wife learned to be glad for what she had. They lived simply and happily in their little cottage for the rest of their days.
